Short Stories/Novellas

What We Want:
Blue Dream Press is a paying market looking for submissions for the first issue of its fiction magazine, spotlighting new authors writing compelling weird fiction. We are looking for all kinds of fiction, primarily horror, bizarro, and dark fiction. Anything is welcome, especially if it has a strong “weird” element with an intriguing plot and setting. Gore (but not for gore’s sake), violence, and strong subject matter are definitely welcome, as long as they are well-done with the story.

Some films with styles we like: Mulholland Drive, Pan’s Labyrinth, old slasher films, as well as work from Takashi Miike, Dario Argento, and Quentin Tarantino
Some literature with styles we like: Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs, Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk, American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis

Overall, we are looking for stories that make the reader feel like they just stepped out of a bizarre dream; whether it be a nightmare or not is up to you. Make us feel like we just woke up from a drug trip with your descriptions. Make us feel like we've been life-long friends with that snake-headed man you develop in your story. Anything goes, really--just give us a beginning, middle, and an end, and make sure it's dreamy, terrifying, and unlike a run-of-the-mill genre story.

What We Don’t Want:
Vampires, werewolves, and zombies (unless they are all done in a way we’ve never even seen before). Monsters are perfect, as long as they don’t fall into the typical monster-genre category. We don’t want something that’s normal, everyday fiction—we want something that will f**k with our minds and make us think after reading.

Length: 2,500-6,000 words, query if longer

Payment: 1/4 cent per word

Please submit your story as a word or RTF attachment, along with a bio of yourself and “FICTION SUBMISSION” in the subject line, in an email to Please use standard manuscript formatting: double-spaced with 1″ margins; two spaces after colons and sentence-ending punctuation. Font must be Times New Roman or Courier New, size twelve. Set first line indents to .3 and do not insert hard breaks between paragraphs.
Also, please no simultaneous submissions or reprints. For published pieces we take First-time Print Rights. Bear in mind that most magazines will not publish pieces that have been published in print or on the web, so for all intents and purposes if your work is published by us it can only be marketed as a reprint, which severely limits the number of markets that will accept it, and drastically reduces the pay rate it can receive. It is up to you, the author, to decide if publishing your work in our magazine.

ARTISTS GUIDELINES: Please submit for cover art! We are looking for strange art that fits the type of stories we are looking for. Payment for front and back cover art is $20. Send your art submissions to including attachments or links with up to three different pieces of art you would like to submit. Color is preferred, but you may also send B&W.

ARTISTS: In addition to front cover art, we are also looking for back cover art and art to be included inside the magazine. Front and back covers will need to be submitted in color, and inside art submissions are to be in black and white. Payment for inside art is $5. Keep in mind the trade paperback size of our magazine.

Blue Dream Press plans to publish Blue Dream Magazine semi-annually.
The first issue will be published as a 6x9 trade paperback.
The magazine will be released in POD format, with availability in various online stores, including Amazon.
